Travelling from Sheffield to London with EMR

Review by Jorja Whatmore

I got the bus into Sheffield city centre to reach the station, the entrance to Sheffield train station is an inviting site when leaving or arriving as the two water feature sculptures in Sheaf Square always shine in the sunlight.

I already had my digital ticket on my phone, so inside the station I headed up the stairs and along the walkway to find my platform. As Sheffield is often the starting station on this route into London, my EMR train was already there waiting for me to board. Although East Midlands Railway offer First Class I was sat in Standard Class today and had a fold-down table and plug socket at my seat by the window.

The train only stopped at three stations along the way, Chesterfield, Derby and Leicester, so it only took just over two hours to reach London, which is pretty quick! During the journey, staff offered a trolley service full of hot and cold drinks, alcohol, and snacks.

Once the train pulled into London St Pancras station, I was greeted by the station’s iconic curved roof, and Tracey Emin’s ‘I Want My Time With You’ artwork suspended from the ceiling. I scanned my ticket to get through the barrier, then headed down the escalators and along the row of shops in the lower level arcade to hop on the tube.
